Andrea Yates Unlawful Killing her Children
Background:
Andrea Yates woke up early morning and provide a nice breakfast to her
husband and five children, Noah, 7 years old, John, 5 years, Paul, 3 years, Luke,
2 years, and a little daughter, Mary 6 months. After countering life and health
issue, in June 20, 2001, she killed all of her children by drawing them in the
bathtub one by one in less than one hour as she admitted to the officer.
Assumption: Why did a mother murder her children?
After reviewing Yates’ health record, she has a major depression,
schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar. That suffers her and
made her towards drawing her five children. Most importantly, one element
that might have courage her to commit a crime is that her treatment had been
discontinued. In June 4, 2001, two weeks before the incident, psychiatrist
Mohammed Saeed cut off Yates’ medicine and stopped treating her. In my
perspective, this another aspects which might resulted a person in Yate’s
condition health, commit a crime. Her psychiatrist’s action could be a lead that
makes her driving insane.
Reported Suicide:
Andrea Yates had been attempting many times to commit suicide. In June 17,
1999, she took an overdose of trazodone. One month later, she tried to kill
herself by a knife. She had been reported several time for trying to kill herself,
and that what would give her a feeling to commit a murder. In some similar
cases, some people who are mentally ill, have a thought that it’s better to kill
my children to go to heaven with no judgment and the life is full of problems
and so on.

Relationship Experience:
After she got along with Rusty Yates, her ex-husband, she gave up her job and
did not work later on. Earlier that time, in 1994, she became pregnant. When she
had her first couple’s of babied, she had a hallucination. By the time she was
suffering of all of these incidents above, in February 2001, her father passed
away. That was tragic for her which also made her acting unexpectedly crazy. For
instance, when she watched the T-V, she thought that the actors were talking to
her. She was pulling her hair. Yates stopped drinking and even did not nurse her
little baby, Mary.
Education:
Andrea Yates completed two years nursing at University of Houston and
graduated from UT School of Nursing. And then, she found a job at UT. She
worked as a registered nurse.
The Day of Crime:
After her husband left the house, she killed her children and dialed 911. In the
police record call between her and 911 operator. Operator said “DO you need
an ambulance”? She responded “No, I need a police officer”. A short pause
and said” Yes, send an ambulance”. This conversation illustrates that she did
not know what she had done because she did not how to react. Also, she did
not ask for an ambulance firstly.

Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity:
Yate’s trial started on March 2002, during that time, the arraignment’s master
observer, specialist his name was Park Dietz, informed that Yates got the plan
to drawing her kids from a short video in the episodes of T-V show named
“Law and Order.” Nonetheless, the show’s producer after the trial, express
that no such scene at any point publicized. Which means she might come up
with this argument as an excuse.

NGRI Courage:
Thought or opinion about people who are insane and commit a crime, would
you think that would courage these people towards these type of issue?

Last Judgment:
Yates was convicted first degree murder for killing her five children. For this
type of crime in Texas’ Law, A person should face a death penalty. However,
the reason that change the judgment is, in 2005, her witness psychiatrist Park
Dietz admitted in the court he testified incorrect information. She was classified as a mental ill and
the judge sentenced her a life sentence in prison because she was NGRI.
Neglecting of her husband:
My feeling towards her husband, he should have been charged with negligence
since he had been told that his wife had metal illness postpartum. He was told over and over from
her doctor that she was suffering. However, the end was depressing. That was a tragic not only
because 5 children were killed but because it was completely *preventable*. Her husband is just as
responsible for the children’s deaths as she is; in fact he’s even more guilty. She was mentally ill, *he
knew it*, and did *nothing*.
