Paper – Option 2

TRANSPORTATION IN A WIND-WATER-SOLAR WORLD
The Jacobson plan that we studied last week involved more than just the renewal of the
electricity grid. It also involved powering all transportation by zero emission vehicles (electric
vehicles or hydrogen fuel cell) with the power for these coming from wind, water, or sunlight
(WWS). This represents a major change in the source of energy used for transportation, but will
it represent a change in the transportation itself?
It is at least possible that personal transportation might not change very much. A simple view of
the future would involve local travel in electric cars and long-distance travel on electric trains or
hydrogen-powered airplanes. So, in this sense, the engineering behind society’s transportation
choices might be profoundly different, but the transportation itself might not be.
Or, it might be. Perhaps people will move about in entirely different ways in 2050 and the present
model will become obsolete?
So far, transportation decisions have largely been individual choices. We have learned that the
state of California can endorse a renewable portfolio standard for its electric utilities. However,
it is less obvious whether the state of California can change all the personal vehicles within its
boundaries. California is among the most progressive states regarding action to mitigate climate
change. Other states are considerably less likely to stop the use of fossil-fuel-derived gasoline
vehicles. However, if we want to achieve a complete clean energy transition, a transition away
from oil-based gasoline is necessary. And, if this is to happen by 2050, the next 20 years should
show substantial progress in that direction.
Your assignment is to write a paper of 800 to 1200 words in length on these questions:
1. In your opinion, will society’s personal transportation fundamentally change? Or will
only the source of energy for transportation change and the way people move around will
fundamentally remain the same? Be sure to make a clear claim and defend it with specific,
realistic evidence.
2. What will personal transportation in one specific Region in Canada and/or the United
States look like at the end of 2040? You may choose a region of your interest; seek to
consider a region small enough that you can understand it and make specific claims yet
large enough that understanding gained can be transferable to most of society (for
example Vancouver, Northern BC, Texas). You can use Jakobson’s claim that zero emission
vehicles make up 100% of personal transportation by 2050 as a starting point.
3. To what extend will this transition of personal transportation help mitigate climate
change from a life cycle perspective? Think about infrastructure and other major changes
necessary for this transition.
You are encouraged to do this assignment in groups. Do understand that working in groups
requires that the range, detail, and rigor of thought that you put into this assignment be (at least)
twice or three times as impressive as if you did this alone. All group members will receive the
same grade for their assignment.
Paper Writing Guidelines
In order to succeed on this assignment, please ensure that your paper meets the following
guidelines:
•
Use specific evidence/analysis to support all claims/assertions: Assemble strong,
specific, factual evidence to support your claims, including quoting, paraphrasing, and
summarizing background information.
•
Introduce and discuss all quotations/paraphrases in detail: Each quotation must be
introduced and discussed in detail to show the reader how it relates to your paper’s
argumentative claims and overall thesis.
•
Use coherent, single-topic paragraphs: Ensure that each paragraph contains only one
subject and its supporting evidence; add transition words between ideas and between
paragraphs to show connections between the topics you discuss.
•
Be persuasive: The purpose of answering question 2 and 3 in your paper must be
to convince/persuade the reader that your position/ opinion is a correct one, not merely
to present information or discuss something widely accepted.
•
Use correct APA in-text citations and include a correct APA References list: For each
quotation and paraphrase, you must include a correct in-text citation. These in-text
citations must correspond to entries on the References list.
•
Use concise, direct, and active sentence structure: This paper should use a formal,
academic style; however, the writing should not be verbose. Using the first person often
helps to avoid the passive voice and keep sentences concise. Therefore, please feel free
to use the pronoun “I”; however, avoid hedging statements like “I feel.”
