Purpose

The communication assignments in this course aim to develop communication skills that students will need in their professional lives. Students will study, analyze, and synthesize information and research through independent and group learning contexts, and will use both oral and written communication to do this work. Through these assignments, students will develop skills that will help them excel in their professional endeavors. Targeted skills include: argumentation; analysis; organization; presentation skills; and small group and interpersonal communication skills.

Goals

This assignment has two goals:

to begin understanding and synthesizing the cultural/social aspects that must be considered as part of engineering economic analysis
to make an argument regarding a plant location recommendation based only on your cultural/social analysis and the specific policy of parental leave

Objectives

The objectives of this assignment include: summary; research; making a case; interpersonal communication

Overview

The first chapter of your economics textbook (the big book) contextualizes engineering economic analysis and decision making within the Code of Ethics of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). In the first item on this list, the NSPE states that “Engineers, in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall: Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public.” As an ethically inclined engineer, you will first want to consider the people impacted by the decisions you are considering, and how your work and vision will fit into the lives and cultures of those people.

For this assignment, you will examine the cultural dimensions of Denmark and the United States as laid out on the Hoftede Insights website. You will summarize the information you find into the form attached to this assignment, compare two specific dimensions of each country, and conduct a mini analysis regarding the socio-political policy of parental leave.

You will complete this assignment using this pre-formatted document: Cultural Comparison.docx

Some resources have been provided for you below. Use these resources to complete Task 3 . You must cite the resources below using in-text citations, and in the “Works Cited” section provided to you at the end of the document.
