I am very surprised at the amount of different research approaches that can be used while conducting research for a proposal. The various types and approaches give the researcher so many options to use while conducting research for a proposal. This week’s lesson on the experimental and non-experimental approaches provides different designs to use while experimenting for research.
The experimental design is defined as an approach used in research that allows the researcher to make causal inferences about the relationship between an independent and a dependent variable, rule out alternative explanations, and detect differences in outcomes. This lesson describes the differences between experimental design in the social science, the completely randomized design, and the randomized block design. Each design method has its unique way of using experiments while conducting research. The social science method makes comparisons between two equivalent groups. The completely randomized design uses randomized participants to account for the effects of outside variables. The randomized block design divides study participants into small groups within blocks which are randomly assigned to treatment conditions. With the experimental design steps include, making an observation, thinking of questions, formulating hypotheses, developing testable predictions, gathering data to test predictions, and developing general theories.
The non-experimental design method to research is used when the researcher does not need to test the relationship between two variables but may only want or need to test a single variable. This lesson describes a non-experimental design method as one that lacks the manipulation of an independent variable, random assignment of participants, and does not provide strong evidence.
I think that the experimental design would be more beneficial for me to use in my research proposal because I am trying to compare the relationship between personal privacy and the national security when it comes to value. As described in this week’s reading, this design is useful by researchers with a specific question to answer or a hypothesis to test for research. In my research proposal, I will need to answer a specific question, which is valued most when it comes to personal privacy or the national security? The use of the experimental design method should help me with determining an outcome to my question. Also outlined in this week’s reading are approaches to the experimental research method. These approaches include control, statistically analyzable, verifiable, and generally yields yes/no answer. By using this method, I will be able to control the aspect of my situation by answering the question, why people value personal privacy and why people value the national security. This will allow me to analyze my results based on the reasons each is valued. Other researchers will be able to use my experiment to validate results. I will not be using a quantitative method of research therefore statistics will not need to be analyzed and a yes or no answer will not be necessary to answer. These two are both other approaches that can be used while using the experimental design method.
The various methods that can be used in research gives a researcher many options and approaches to take while conducting research.

Gregory:
There are many different types of research design when a person or group of people decides to research a specific topic. These research methods fall under two different umbrellas experimental and non-experimental research. When people think of research designs they generally thing of experimental research. This type of research experiments with variables and the conditions provided to the participants in the research. An example of this would be a control group and an experimental group to look at the cause and effect of whatever research is being conducted. When someone here’s the work research they immediately think of a laboratory setting with participants undergoing some type of research or lab rats being injected by some type of medicine and this is exactly what experimental research is for the most part. (Research Designs: Non-Experimental vs. Experimental. (2020, March 4).
This type of research is great in certain areas such as medicine, biology and social science. Experimental Research can be very labor intensive and can be hard to justify the results due to the tightly controlled or experimental settings but this type of research can give very good results. When experiment research is conducted if often occurs within a laboratory setting or an area where every little thing is controlled and the researchers do this so they can easily change any of the variables. The issue is such a controlled environment is not realistic and does not mimic a real time setting. Non-experimental Research is where you look at a relationship between variables as it already stands without interfering or changing any of the variables. You cannot determine any casual effects when using Non-experimental research the issue with non-experimental is the validity of the measurements not the validity of the effects. Non-experimental Research is best used to take a topic that you want to research and use things such as questionnaires or surveys to conduct your research. The type of research used within my research proposal is non-experimental. I made the decisions to use surveys primarily for my research proposal. My topic is over the accuracy of eyewitness testimony within the court room setting. This consisted of proving surveys to judges and jury members to find measures that can be applied by judges, jurors, and investigating officers in assessing eyewitness accounts accuracy and their dependability in court. The reason why I decided to use a survey and the non-experimental research method is so surveys can be provided to judges, jury’s and investigating officers to look at the potential causes that lead to false eyewitness testimony and also find out what could help with an accurate eyewitness testimony. These surveys will then be looked at and used to determine the factors that could be changed or manipulated to better assist to ensure the eyewitness testimony the is given in the court room setting is more likely to be true and accurate.
