Goal Choice
The strategic goal I’ll focus on is to have Amazon increase their presence by opening
physical stores. This will help increase their target market and augment brand popularity.

Attract
I believe employees should have the following three traits to help Amazon accomplish its goal:
1. Good communication
a. Too often things get lost in translation, not just from a language standpoint, but
from a generational standpoint. Amazon employees will need to be able to
communicate effectively with customers who may not be as up-to-date on
technology.
2. Anticipate Customer Needs
a. Many times customers don’t actually know what they want or need when they are
shopping. It is imperative the employees be able to actively listen to a customer
and anticipate what the customer will want or need for the future. This will not
only help with sales, but will help with building customer relationships to keep
customers coming back and help more customers come in.
3. Be a Relationship Person
a. It goes without saying that it’s important to build rapport with just about anyone.
To ensure products sell, you must be able to strike up a conversation with
complete strangers, get people to open up, and be a great listener.
Strategies
The first strategy I’ll use to attract qualified employees will be to find passive candidates
and let them know Amazon wants them. A passive candidate would be someone who is already
employed and not actively looking for a job. Those are typically the people who are most
qualified and by reaching out to them it shows that Amazon is truly interested in their talent and
will grab their attention. The second strategy I’ll use to attract qualified employees will be to be

worth working for. That entails offering competitive salaries and benefits and also providing a
high-functioning work place. We would have effective management, recognition programs for a
job well done, and professional development. Even the best hiring process won’t overcome bad
word of mouth about what it’s like to work for a particular company.
These strategies fit with Amazon’s style and goal by being a go-getter place of
employment where we recognize qualifications and reward those qualifications and jobs well
done with competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and great recognition programs.
Develop
Employees will be trained both online and face to face. The reason for this is the online
training gives employees a chance to know the system Amazon uses and help guide customers
through the online catalogs. The face to face training will be beneficial as it will allow
employees to learn how to handle customers who may be older, younger, or of a different
culture. It gives a sense of community which is appealing not only to employees, but also to
customers.
Two areas that training for new employees should cover would be basic sales skills and
active listening skills. An employee needs to know the basics of how to make a sale, which
includes the ability to be persuasive, but not pushy. When a customer discusses what they think
they need or want, many times what they say can lead you to anticipate something the customer
may need in the future, based on what the customer wants at that point in time. If you actively
listen to a customer, you can help them anticipate what they need, and even if you don’t make
the sale for a future need, the customer will be more than appreciative that the employee listened
in the first place and gave the customer assistance for the future.

Two areas of training for existing employees would be learning to find a new rhythm, and
the second area would be advancing their skills. When you’ve been working and find a rhythm in
sales, it’s sometimes hard to let go of that rhythm. In the second area, it’s important to help
existing employees advance their skills, which will ultimately be the company’s success.
To build a sales training program, you have to start at the bottom. I will create a list of the
skills every employee will need. Employees will need to train in 3 core areas; sales, products,
and customer service. There will also be three different levels of achievement; foundation
(beginner), intermediate, and advanced. The idea is to reach the advanced level in all three core
areas through teamwork and effective communication.
Retain
The two retention strategies used will be competitive salary and benefits and reducing a
work-life balance struggle for employees. The advantages of these strategies is that it will help
employees stay well compensated for their work, giving them incentive to work hard, but it will
also keep them happy knowing they are not struggling to balance work and their personal life.
The disadvantages of these policies is the monetary cost to the company. The aspects of these
strategies that address the importance of retaining a diverse team would be the importance of a
work-life balance for everyone while making decent money. Most employees struggle to not
only not live paycheck to paycheck, but it’s hard to achieve that and not feel like you live at
work. These policies will prevent both of those fallouts.
