Overview: This assignment is designed to increase your knowledge of I/O Psychology by providing practice in applying
course concepts to an actual job. It will involve applying topics learned in class to a particular job you have experience
with. Think about a job you currently have or have had in the past that you might use for this project. You may use the
same job you did for Paper #1
Due Date: April 15 through Canvas (by 11:59pm); late submissions will be penalized as stated in the syllabus (1% per
hour late). If you need an extension, please contact me as soon as possible.
SimCheck: Please note that all submissions will be run through SimCheck to detect plagiarizing. You will be able to see

Formatting: This assignment must be typed, single spaced, with 1 inch margins and 12-point font. Your completed
assignment should be one to two pages long with this formatting. Do not use extra spaces between paragraphs or long

Please note that this is not a research paper; you do not need a Title Page, Abstract, Introduction, Method, Results, or
Discussion section. APA style is not required. You do not need to include a references section and you do not need to
refer to any additional sources beyond your textbook and the class slides. Write your responses succinctly. Do not use
unnecessarily wordy or long sentences. Include the most relevant information, written as clearly as you can.

this document).

specific application of course concepts (clear alignment with course material, including textbook and slides), and (3)
spelling, grammar, and writing clarity.
Instructions: Thoroughly respond to all questions below. Again, please number your responses.
1. Job Title and brief description: State the Job Title for the job you are using for this assignment and provide a onesentence description of this job.
2. Work motivation part a: Choose one of the following theories of work motivation we went over in class from the list
below. Explain that theory in detail in your own words. This should be about one full paragraph. See chapter 9 in
your textbook, motivation slides, and motivation videos for information on these theories.

i. Self-Determination Theory,
ii. Job Characteristics Model, or
iii. Expectancy Theory
3. Work motivation part b: Apply the theory you chose in #2 to explain your levels of motivation in the job you named
in #1. Provide specific detail and multiple examples to demonstrate that you fully understand the theory and can
apply it correctly to this job. This should be one full paragraph. Again, see chapter 9 in your textbook, motivation
slides, and motivation videos.
4. Work motivation part c: Using the theory you identified in #2, state one possible way to improve work motivation in
your job based on that theory. In other words, apply the theory to explain one possible intervention or job change
that could be made to improve motivation levels. Make sure your recommendation is consistent with that theory
you chose, and explain how/why your recommendation is in line with that theory in your response to this question.
If your own personal work motivation is already very high, try to think about it from the perspective of improving it
for other employees. This should be one full paragraph. See chapter 9 in your textbook, motivation slides, and
motivation videos for information.
5. Stress and occupational health psychology part a: Choose one of the three stress theories below and explain that
theory, in detail, in your own words. This should be one full paragraph. See chapter 12 and stress and OHP slides and
videos for information.

6. Stress and occupational health psychology part b: Name and describe one possible stressor in the job you named in
#1. This can be any stressor related to the job (so, not a stressor at home – but something job-related). Apply the
theory you explained in #5 specifically to this stressor. Use detail and specific examples. This should be one full
paragraph.
7. Stress and occupational health psychology part c: Name and provide details on one possible way to address the
stressor you named in #6. This should be one full paragraph. Be sure to provide details on your recommendation,
address the following questions and connect to course material as much as possible:
a. How would you implement this?
b. Is this an individual approach to managing the stressor (textbook p. 459) or an organizational approach to
managing the stressor (p. 462)?
c. Is your recommendation designed to stop the stressor from occurring (primary prevention) or to lessen
negative effects the stressor has (secondary prevention)?
