Informed consent is the communication process involving a health care provider and a patient. In this process, both parties have the opportunity to ask questions and exchange relevant information related to the diagnostic and treatment of the patient. Informed consent can be used in clinical practice or clinical research. However, the process is only effective if both parties have an active participation and share the responsibility for the accurate exchange of information.

The healthcare providers have not an ethical obligation but a legal duty to obtain informed consent from their patients. The patient, representative or a family member must be given as many opportunities as needed to understand any medical procedure or treatment the patient will receive and to have all questions answered before any treatments and procedures.
