information about the scholars who authored the sources. It is acknowledging their efforts on the
working they did in improving the literature.
In my GE class, I learned that there are several ways of using citations. A writer can
decide to quote directly and stipulate the author, year of publication, and page number of the
source of the direct quote. Secondly, paraphrasing a piece of information, and placing a citation
at the end of the sentence is another way. A proper citation gives a probable outcome in a paper
being done. Firstly, a writer needs to determine the citation style they need to use. Lee and Casal
(2018) mentioned that the known methods in writing of articles are the Modern Language
Association, the American Psychological Association, and the Chicago formats.

My major is Sociology and sociologists and I use citations to give credit where it’s due. So we can

Marine Policy Project and had to pick a current issue concerning our oceans, do research and write letters
of appeal for the last part of the project. The topic I chose to do my project on was “Plastic Waste Disposal
in Bay Area Pacific Oceans.” I did endless research online for all aspects of the project. My professor
broke the project up into four parts covering the whole semester. A strong recommendation my professor
gave the class was that in the first part of the project, to introduce our chosen topic and research several
sources that we will use in the last four parts of the project. She recommended this so that it would easier

well-supported sources throughout the entire project. It also made it super easy for me to construct my
bibliography when I was done because I had all of the sources I used already put together and in order.
