Writing involves borrowing information from past literature. Citations prove that a piece
of writing has reputable data. Besides, citations offer useful information that can enhance the
process of making inferences regarding an aspect under study (Lee & Casal, 2018). While doing
my assignment relating to my business administration major, I used scholarly sources to back up
my information and to argue facts regarding my stance on strategic business plans. Citations and
references justify that a writer has used specific information from scholarly literature or book to
write their paper (Lee & Casal, 2018). Citations pay credit for the work done by the author
whose information or research results supports a current study. It gives a reader a glimpse of how
the writer did detailed research to deliver the content in writing. Thus, citation proves the
originality of work. It is vital to give credit to the source of information incorporated in research.
Paying credit to the author of a particular piece also enhances the room to justify research data.
Citations in research ascertain that the paper is an accurate depiction of research. After
employing citations through paraphrasing, direct quotes, or using parenthesis, the information
depicts a justification for a well-researched paper (Lee & Casal, 2018). Citations give essential
information about the scholars who authored the sources. It is acknowledging their efforts on the
working they did in improving the literature.
In my GE class, I learned that there are several ways of using citations. A writer can
decide to quote directly and stipulate the author, year of publication, and page number of the
source of the direct quote. Secondly, paraphrasing a piece of information, and placing a citation
at the end of the sentence is another way. A proper citation gives a probable outcome in a paper
being done. Firstly, a writer needs to determine the citation style they need to use. Lee and Casal
(2018) mentioned that the known methods in writing of articles are the Modern Language
Association, the American Psychological Association, and the Chicago formats.

My major is Sociology and sociologists and I use citations to give credit where it’s due. So we can
avoid plagiarism and show were we got our information from. In my Sociology classes so far, my
professors require that we use ASA (American Sociological Association) style for in-text citations and
bibliographies. Using citations allows me to use the best research and information I can find for my
assignments. It gives my readers the information is they want to find the source I cited again and about the
author who wrote it originally. This can also allow the reader to read from the original source and better
understand why I used that information for what I am writing about. Citing is a way to show that your
theories and research is well-supported. I’ve used citations for summaries, paraphrases and quotations.
I actually have two assignments that I recently did last semester that involved many citations. The
first one was a Zine assignment for my Sociology of Gender class. I chose to make my Zine about “Gender
and Instagram.” I had to do online research and find data on females vs. males on Instagram, the
percentage of which sex uses the social media more, and so on. The class textbook was a big source of
information for this assignment as well. I used in-text citations and constructed a bibliography on the last
page of my Zine. The second assignment I did was for my Geology class: The Oceans. I was assigned a
Marine Policy Project and had to pick a current issue concerning our oceans, do research and write letters
of appeal for the last part of the project. The topic I chose to do my project on was “Plastic Waste Disposal
in Bay Area Pacific Oceans.” I did endless research online for all aspects of the project. My professor
broke the project up into four parts covering the whole semester. A strong recommendation my professor
gave the class was that in the first part of the project, to introduce our chosen topic and research several
sources that we will use in the last four parts of the project. She recommended this so that it would easier
for us as we faced those four other parts. I used those same citations for each part and kept them
organized so it was easy to go back to that source later in my project. This allowed me to have the same
well-supported sources throughout the entire project. It also made it super easy for me to construct my
bibliography when I was done because I had all of the sources I used already put together and in order.
