UNCG Educate and Advocate Lifetime Wellness Annotated Bibliography Educate and Advocate Campaign Project
Imagine that you have been hired by a Center for Well-Being in your local community. The Director of the Center for Well-Being is so impressed with your efforts and energy, she has decided to give you the responsibility of developing well-researched, scientific power point presentation that addresses an aspect of health or a dimension of wellness (in one of the nine areas we studied previously), with the idea that your power point presentation will be shown in the Center for Well-Being.
Your presentation should be developed for a specific population (elementary school aged children, college students, obese men between the ages of 40-50) – BE SPECIFIC!
The foundation of your assignment will be based on a modified version of the scientific method. The scientific method is a process for questioning that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Does this mean all scientists follow exactly this process? No. Some areas of science can be more easily tested than others. For example, scientists studying how stars change as they age or how dinosaurs digested their food cannot fast-forward a star’s life by a million years or run medical exams on feeding dinosaurs to test their hypotheses. When direct experimentation is not possible, scientists modify the scientific method. In fact, there are probably as many versions of the scientific method as there are scientists! But even when modified, the goal remains the same: to discover cause and effect relationships by asking questions, carefully gathering and examining the evidence, and seeing if all the available information can be combined into a logical answer.
I have broken it up into manageable steps for you to successfully complete this assignment.
Step 1:
Determine your question
The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe or are curious about: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where? The question that you formulate should be personal and meaningful to you. Ideally, you will become a “mini-expert” on a health topic of your choice. Your question should be very specific within one area of health / dimension of wellness and focused on a specific population.
Sample questions may be:
1. Physical Health: “What are the barriers to physical activity for mothers with young children?”
“Is the weight loss supplement CLA effective and safe for moderately obese individuals?”
2. Emotional Health: “Who experience more depression: College-aged men or women?”
“Does regular exercise improve self-esteem in young adults?”
3. Intellectual Health: “How do high school students make decisions about using drugs (choose one or more – tobacco, alcohol, opioids, etc)?”
Step 2:
Do Background Research
It is critical that you do the necessary background work to better understand the question you are attempting to answer/better understand.
For this aspect of your assignment, you must complete an Annotated Bibliography.
An Annotated Bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation.
The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
You need to include eight annotations (this means you need to review eight research articles) in your bibliography.
Each article that you include in your bibliography should have a publication date of 2012 to 2019.
Here is a great resource to assist you with this aspect of your assignment, which should be written using APA style:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPhWhRlEWtI. This is another resource for you as well:https://www.bethel.edu/library/research/apa-annobib-sixth.pdf
